Mae Waters, 15, has died following a devastating hit-and-run crash on U.S. Highway 90 in Lake City, Florida, according to the Lake City Police Department. She became the third victim to lose her life in the collision after being hospitalized since the incident over the weekend.
Authorities confirmed that Mae Waters died on Wednesday from injuries sustained in the crash. She joins Bonnie Jean Welker, 44, and Mya Raulerson, 16, who were both pronounced dead earlier following the same incident.
Investigators say the crash occurred on Saturday when a Ford F-150 driven by 31-year-old Jaron Carr was traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 90 and struck a minivan that was turning at the intersection of Northwest Centurion Court.
After the collision, officials say Carr fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. He was later located at the Gateway Inn and taken into custody.
Carr has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash, driving with a suspended license, and outstanding warrants from Missouri and Brevard County, Florida. Authorities say additional charges may still be added as the investigation continues.
The crash has deeply affected the Lake City community, as three lives have now been lost, including two teenagers. Families, friends, and residents are mourning while remembering the victims and supporting one another during this difficult time.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash and is asking anyone with additional information to come forward.
Mae Waters will be remembered by those who knew and loved her as the community grieves a heartbreaking and sudden loss.
