A driver has died following a tragic single-vehicle crash on the Western Highway near Ararat, Victoria, after the truck they were operating left the roadway and struck a tree early Wednesday morning, according to police.
Authorities said the crash occurred around 4:20 a.m., about 500 metres east of Heath Street, when a truck travelling eastbound collided with a tree. The vehicle was then engulfed in flames.
The driver, who has not yet been formally identified, died at the scene.
Emergency crews responded to the incident, and the Western Highway was closed in both directions while firefighters and police worked at the site. Diversions were put in place as investigators assessed the scene.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash, including why the vehicle left the roadway.
